Thane district has initiated trial runs for Mumbai Metro Line 9, marking its debut on the metro map and unveiling India's pioneering double-decker infrastructure that combines a metro line with a vehicular flyover. This innovative design is aimed at easing traffic congestion, boosting connectivity, and setting a new benchmark for urban infrastructure projects nationwide.

Overview of Metro Line 9

Mumbai Metro Line 9 extends the existing Red Line (Line 7) from Dahisar East to Mira-Bhayandar, spanning about 13.6 kilometers with eight stations: Dahisar East, Pandurang Wadi, Miragaon, Kashigaon, Sai Baba Nagar, Meditiya Nagar, Shahid Bhagat Singh Garden, and Subhash Chandra Bose Stadium. This corridor is designed to strengthen connections between Mumbai's western suburbs and the fast-growing areas of Mira-Bhayandar and Thane.

Phase 1: Dahisar East to Kashigaon

The initial phase covers 4.4 kilometers from Dahisar East to Kashigaon, including four stations: Dahisar East, Pandurang Wadi, Miragaon, and Kashigaon. Trial runs began on May 14, 2025, following the energization of overhead traction wires. These tests involve evaluating load capacities, signaling, power systems, and emergency responses to ensure operational safety and efficiency.

Innovative Double-Decker Design

A key highlight of Metro Line 9 is its double-decker viaduct, integrating a vehicular flyover on the lower deck with the metro line above. This approach optimizes limited urban space, reduces construction expenses, and lowers environmental impact by consolidating infrastructure footprints. It facilitates smooth transit for both road users and metro passengers in a shared corridor.

Enhanced Connectivity and Integration

Metro Line 9 is set to enhance regional mobility by connecting with several existing and upcoming metro lines:

  • Metro Line 2A: Dahisar East to D N Nagar

  • Metro Line 7: Dahisar East to Andheri East

  • Metro Line 7A: Access to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport

  • Metro Line 10: Extension to Gaimukh

  • Metro Line 13: Connectivity to Vasai-Virar

These interconnections will provide commuters with seamless travel options across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), reduce dependence on road transport, and ease congestion on major arteries like the Western Express Highway.

Environmental and Urban Impact

The launch of Metro Line 9 is expected to yield multiple benefits:

  • Traffic Decongestion: Offering a reliable alternative to road travel, especially near Dahisar Toll Naka.

  • Lower Emissions: Encouraging a modal shift from vehicles to eco-friendly rail transport.

  • Energy Efficiency: Incorporating regenerative braking and modern energy-saving technologies.

  • Sustainable Construction: Employing green building practices to minimize environmental impact during development.

Future Developments

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) plans to expand the metro network aggressively, targeting an addition of 50 kilometers in 2025, 62 kilometers in 2026, and 60 kilometers in 2027, aiming to build a comprehensive and efficient public transit system for the entire metropolitan region.

Conclusion

The start of trial runs for Metro Line 9 marks a pivotal advancement in Mumbai's urban transport landscape. Featuring India's first double-decker metro-flyover integration and enhanced connectivity across vital suburbs, this project embodies innovative solutions to pressing urban mobility challenges. As the network grows, residents can anticipate faster commutes, improved accessibility, and a greener, more sustainable city environment.
