The much-anticipated Metro Line 10 project, designed to connect Gaimukh in Thane to Shivaji Chowk in Mira-Bhayander, is reportedly inching closer to its execution phase. Maharashtra Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik announced on Tuesday that the tender process for this transformative corridor is expected to commence by December 15, 2025, following a crucial project review meeting with senior officials.

The ₹8,000 crore elevated corridor, being planned by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), is anticipated to significantly ease commuter woes across Thane and Mira-Bhayander. The project holds immense promise for reducing traffic dependency on the heavily congested Ghodbunder Road in Thane, which currently serves as the primary arterial route between these two regions.

Metro Line 10 Project Overview

According to official sources, the Metro Line 10 project encompasses several critical specifications that position it as a game-changer for urban mobility in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).

Parameter Details
Route Gaimukh (Thane) to Shivaji Chowk (Mira-Bhayander)
Estimated Cost ₹8,000 Crore
Route Type Fully Elevated Corridor
Tender Timeline Expected by December 15, 2025
Estimated Completion 3 Years from Construction Commencement
Implementing Agency MMRDA

Environmental and Engineering Complexities

Metro Line 10 is being described as one of the most technically challenging metro routes within the MMR. Officials have indicated that the project faces several complex engineering and environmental hurdles that must be addressed before construction can proceed smoothly.

The key challenges reportedly include the necessity to traverse forest land and navigate steep ghat gradients. Additionally, hill slope slicing would be required to accommodate proper track curvature, while maintaining a minimum clearance of 6.5 metres beneath elevated sections. Environmental clearances from relevant authorities are also mandatory before any ground-breaking activity can commence.

A senior official present at the review meeting stated that experts had flagged several constraints, particularly concerning smooth curve alignment and ghat section adjustments. The official emphasised that the project's viability would hinge on acquiring all necessary clearances upfront to avoid mid-way construction halts. This approach aligns with mega Thane infrastructure projects currently transforming regional connectivity.

Commuter Relief and Connectivity Enhancement

Once operational, Metro Line 10 is expected to provide a direct, high-speed alternative to the congested Ghodbunder Highway. Currently, the highway remains the sole road connector between Thane and Bhayander, creating severe bottlenecks during peak hours. Existing travel options via Bhiwandi, Powai, or central Mumbai rail corridors are either circuitous or perpetually overcrowded.

The metro corridor is also anticipated to integrate into a larger transit loop, connecting the western suburbs, South Mumbai, and distant Thane suburbs. This integration would substantially improve overall urban mobility across the region, complementing other projects such as the Thane Ring Metro corridor and the new Bhayandarpada Flyover project.

Real estate experts believe that Metro Line 10 would significantly boost property values along its route. Areas such as Mira Road East are already witnessing heightened investor interest, while the 48% surge in MMR real estate prices demonstrates how infrastructure development drives property appreciation.

Administrative Coordination and Land Acquisition

The project review meeting witnessed participation from several key administrative officials, including Ashwin Kumar Mudgal, Additional Metropolitan Commissioner at MMRDA; Saurabh Rao, Thane Municipal Commissioner; and Radha Binod Sharma, Mira-Bhayander Municipal Commissioner.

Reports indicate that MMRDA has directed the Mira-Bhayander Municipal Corporation (MBMC) to initiate land acquisition permissions, marking a crucial early step in the project implementation process. This coordinated approach mirrors the administrative efficiency demonstrated in MMRDA's massive infrastructure boost for the Mumbai region.

What Lies Ahead

With the tender expected by mid-December, MMRDA officials are reportedly working against tight deadlines to secure all necessary environmental and regulatory approvals. If the projected timelines are adhered to, construction could potentially commence in early 2026, with completion targeted by 2029.

The Metro Line 10 corridor is expected to transform the way residents commute between Thane and Mira-Bhayander, while also spurring significant real estate development along the route. Prospective homebuyers looking to invest in areas benefiting from metro connectivity may explore properties near metro stations for optimal returns. The project also complements ongoing developments such as the Metro Line 3 BKC-Worli section, further strengthening Mumbai's integrated transit network.
