Thane's notorious Ghodbunder Road bottleneck is finally witnessing relief with the inauguration of the Bhayandarpada Flyover, a vital development that aims to ease traffic congestion and improve urban mobility for thousands of commuters.
Strategic Boost to Thane's Infrastructure
On May 14, 2025, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde formally inaugurated the Bhayandarpada Flyover, in the presence of Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik and key officials from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA). The project is considered a crucial upgrade to Thane’s road infrastructure, particularly along the heavily trafficked Ghodbunder Road.
Project Specifications at a Glance
- Total Flyover Length: 601 meters
- Ramp Lengths: 391.48 meters (Thane side), 189.88 meters (Borivali side)
- Carriageway: 2+2 lanes, each 7.5 meters wide
- Underpasses: Two 2-lane underpasses measuring 20.4 meters and 19.7 meters wide
- Traffic Capacity: Estimated 73,333 Passenger Car Units (PCUs) daily
- Pedestrian Infrastructure: A dedicated underpass ensures safe crossings
The flyover is uniquely built above the viaduct of upcoming Metro Lines 4 and 4A, allowing for optimized land usage and future integration with mass transit systems.
Time and Fuel Efficiency for Commuters
The newly opened stretch is expected to reduce travel time between Thane and Mumbai by 15 to 25 minutes. Daily commuters, especially those from Gaimukh, Waghbil, Brahmand, Kasarvadavali, and Thane East, are likely to benefit from smoother traffic flow and enhanced road safety.
Economic Gains and Greener Transit
Officials indicated that the flyover would boost regional connectivity between areas like Navi Mumbai, Bhiwandi, Vasai-Virar, and Gujarat. With fewer traffic jams and idling vehicles, the project will help reduce fuel wastage and lower emissions—contributing to better air quality and energy savings.
Metro Integration: A Step Toward Smart Urban Mobility
The flyover’s construction in tandem with Metro Lines 4 and 4A sets a strong precedent for integrated transportation planning. Once these lines are operational, passengers will enjoy direct access between road and metro, paving the way for reduced dependency on personal vehicles and a more connected, multimodal commute system.
A Model for Future Infrastructure
Urban experts believe that the Bhayandarpada Flyover could serve as a model for future infrastructure projects in Maharashtra. By solving critical traffic issues today while anticipating tomorrow's transit needs, the initiative represents a forward-thinking approach to city development.
