In what officials are describing as a decisive moment for Kalyan's urban infrastructure, the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) has commenced the demolition of the 50-year-old Optic Building, removing the final obstacle in the construction of Flyover A under the ambitious Station Area Traffic Improvement Scheme (SATIS). The development is expected to bring significant relief to commuters navigating one of the busiest railway hubs in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).

Why the Optic Building Demolition Matters

The Optic Building, long renowned for housing optical and eyewear retail establishments, had reportedly been the primary impediment to completing Flyover A due to protracted legal disputes and structural complexities. According to civic officials, its removal now clears the path for full-scale construction of the flyover's crucial landing section near Subhash Chowk, a segment that had remained stalled for several months. This infrastructure development is expected to boost real estate prospects in the region while addressing chronic traffic bottlenecks.

Flyover A: Key Project Details

Flyover A spans a total length of 1,600 metres, connecting Subhash Chowk to Bail Bazaar. Reports indicate that approximately 1,250 metres of construction has been completed to date. The project is now targeted for completion by the end of February 2026. Much like how Malad flyover faced its deadline challenges, the Kalyan project has also encountered significant delays, though authorities now express confidence in meeting the revised timeline.

The flyover's primary objective is to decongest traffic around Kalyan railway station and improve last-mile connectivity for thousands of daily commuters. Residents of the demolished Optic Building will reportedly receive compensation through Transferable Development Rights (TDR), while the remaining portion of the building is slated for repair to allow existing shops to resume operations.

SATIS Project: Comprehensive Overview

The Station Area Traffic Improvement Scheme was launched in January 2021 with an original estimated cost of ₹498 crore. However, due to legal complications and land acquisition delays, the revised project cost has escalated to ₹602 crore. The scheme encompasses three interconnected flyovers (designated A, C, and D), an ST Depot building, and extensive road widening initiatives. The Smart Kalyan-Dombivli Development Corporation Ltd serves as the implementing agency for this transformative infrastructure transformation project.

Progress on Supporting Flyovers

Alongside Flyover A, construction on Flyovers C and D is reportedly advancing steadily toward completion. Flyover C, measuring 206 metres in total length, has seen 181 metres completed. Similarly, Flyover D, spanning 297 metres, has achieved 260 metres of construction. Both flyovers are expected to open by March 2026, coinciding with the inauguration of the new ST Depot administration building and workshop. These developments mirror similar infrastructure initiatives in nearby Thane that are reshaping urban mobility across the MMR.

Additional Infrastructure Developments

In related developments, KDMC has reportedly secured a 35-year lease on 491 square metres of railway land to support flyover construction. Road widening work from Tal Bar to Brakesman Chawl has been completed to facilitate smoother vehicular movement, much like how strategic bridge construction is relieving traffic in other parts of the region. Traffic diversions are expected to be implemented shortly to accelerate construction activities around Subhash Chowk.

Timeline and Official Statements

KDMC Commissioner Abhinav Goel has reportedly stated that demolition work is progressing rapidly and construction at the previously stalled landing point will now proceed at full pace. The mid-February 2026 deadline is being treated as a top priority by civic authorities. The surge in MMR real estate activity has further intensified pressure on authorities to deliver improved infrastructure that supports the region's growth trajectory.

The demolition of the half-century-old Optic Building marks a significant turning point in the long-delayed SATIS project.
