The eagerly awaited BKC-Worli stretch of Mumbai’s fully underground Metro Line 3 is ready for launch, with operations commencing tomorrow following its official inauguration today. The Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety granted the final safety clearance this Monday, paving the way for this crucial phase of Mumbai’s metro expansion.
Commute Revolution: Aarey to Worli in Just 30 Minutes for ₹60
The newly opened segment is expected to drastically cut down travel time across some of Mumbai’s most traffic-prone corridors. The 22-kilometre stretch will reduce Aarey-Worli commute to just half an hour, at a fare of only ₹60, offering Mumbaikars a faster, affordable, and air-conditioned alternative to crowded roads and suburban trains.
Designed for Connectivity, Built for Impact
While the Metro 3 corridor was originally planned in two phases—Aarey to BKC and BKC to Cuffe Parade—the project was redesigned midway to ensure operational efficiency. Strategic engineering decisions such as crossovers at Acharya Atre Chowk and CSMT are expected to boost frequency and streamline train operations.
The new underground line spans crucial commercial and residential neighbourhoods, including Dharavi, Dadar, Siddhivinayak, and BKC, significantly improving access between employment hubs. Despite Dadar Metro station being about 1km from the local railway station, planners believe it will still offer strong last-mile connectivity due to thoughtful urban integration.
Engineering Feats and Strategic Integration
One of the most technically demanding segments—tunnelling beneath the Mithi River—was successfully completed, highlighting the project’s engineering prowess. This underground corridor will also offer informal interchange options with Metro Lines 2A, 7, and 1, thereby enhancing the city’s transit mesh across both western and eastern suburbs.
Ridership Set to Surge
Since the launch of the Aarey-BKC section in October 2024, Metro Line 3 has seen a steady daily ridership of around 25,000 passengers. Authorities are optimistic that these numbers will surge significantly with the southward extension into densely populated and commercially active zones.
PM Skips Inauguration Amid Ongoing National Events
Although there were expectations around the Prime Minister attending the launch, a senior state government official clarified that national developments—specifically India’s ongoing actions involving Pakistan—prevented his presence.
