In a significant push to ease traffic on Ghodbunder Road, a notorious bottleneck for motorists traveling from Mumbai, Thane, and beyond toward Nashik, Gujarat, and Konkan, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has accelerated the development of alternative routes. This initiative focuses on constructing a network of bridges over Thane Creek, designed to enhance the connectivity between Bhiwandi and Thane.

Details of the Bridge Projects

MMRDA officials disclosed that consultants have been engaged to oversee the construction of three separate bridges. These bridges will connect Kasarvadavli, Gaimukh, and Kolshet on Ghodbunder Road in Thane to Kharbao, Payegaon, and Kalher in Bhiwandi, respectively. The bridges, strategically placed a few kilometers apart, aim to forge direct links across Thane Creek, effectively bypassing congested routes.

Impact on Regional Traffic and Economy

During the 282nd executive committee meeting of the MMRDA, it was revealed that these bridges will significantly reduce congestion on Ghodbunder Road and improve logistical access to Bhiwandi’s warehouses, thereby benefiting the wider metropolitan areas, including JNPT and Gujarat. Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, who also chairs the MMRDA, articulated that these projects are pivotal not only in resolving traffic woes but also in stimulating economic growth and enhancing the quality of life in the region.

Future Projections and Developments

Dr. Sanjay Mukherjee, the Metropolitan Commissioner, emphasized the critical role these projects will play in facilitating smoother traffic flow, fostering urban development, and catering to the escalating demands of Mumbai and Thane’s future infrastructure needs.
