The much-awaited Navi Mumbai International Airport will reportedly commence commercial passenger operations on December 25, 2025, with 46 daily aircraft movements connecting the region to 16 domestic destinations, airport authorities confirmed on Monday.
India's largest greenfield airport development in recent years, the facility will begin with 23 airline departures and 23 arrivals daily, operating between 8 AM and 8 PM during its initial launch phase, according to official sources.
Historic First Flights Mark New Era for Mumbai Metropolitan Region
Airport officials indicated that IndiGo flight 6E460 from Bengaluru will become the first commercial aircraft to land at the new facility at 8:00 AM on December 25. The inaugural departure will reportedly be IndiGo flight 6E882 to Hyderabad, scheduled for 8:40 AM the same day.
The infrastructure is designed to handle up to 10 aircraft movements per hour, with capacity for 120 flights daily once fully operational. Industry sources suggest that the Navi Mumbai real estate market has already begun witnessing increased investor interest ahead of this landmark development.
Three Major Airlines to Serve 16 Domestic Destinations
In its first operational phase, the airport will be served by IndiGo, Air India Express, and Akasa Air, connecting Navi Mumbai to major Indian cities including Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, Cochin, Coimbatore, Goa (both Dabolim and Mopa airports), Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Lucknow, Nagpur, Kolkata, Mangaluru, Jammu, Vadodara, and Aurangabad, according to airline schedules.
From February 1, 2026, the facility is expected to begin round-the-clock operations, with plans to scale up to 34 daily departures initially. This expansion is anticipated to significantly enhance connectivity for regions including Ulwe and Taloja, which are positioned as strategic industrial and residential growth corridors.
Operational Readiness Trials Underway Ahead of Launch
Airport authorities confirmed that Operational Readiness and Airport Transfer (ORAT) trials are currently underway to test operational readiness in coordination with airlines, CISF, and airport agencies. The Central Industrial Security Force was inducted on October 29 and is now deployed across all core security zones of the facility.
Air Traffic Control Coordination
Tower controllers at the new airport will reportedly manage takeoffs and landings up to 2,000 feet altitude. Mumbai airport's approach controllers are expected to handle traffic beyond 2,000 feet altitude and inbound flights until 3,900 feet, ensuring seamless coordination between the two facilities.
The establishment of this new aviation hub is seen as complementary to ongoing Mumbai infrastructure upgrades that are transforming regional connectivity.
World-Class Infrastructure Developed by Adani-CIDCO Joint Venture
The airport has been developed by Navi Mumbai International Airport Ltd (NMIAL), a special purpose vehicle comprising Adani Airports Holdings Ltd (74 percent stake) and CIDCO (26 percent stake). The facility spans 1,160 hectares and features a Terminal 1 designed to handle 20 million passengers annually in Phase 1.
The full design capacity is reportedly set at 90 million passengers per year with two runways and dedicated cargo zones. The terminal's architectural design, inspired by the lotus flower, was created by the renowned Zaha Hadid Architects.
The Adani Group's involvement extends beyond aviation infrastructure, with the conglomerate reportedly planning an INR 10,000 crore landmark township near the airport to capitalize on the development potential.
How Navi Mumbai Airport Compares to Mumbai's CSMIA
Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) currently handles approximately 960 to 1,000 aircraft movements daily with a passenger capacity of 55 million across Terminals 1 and 2. The new Navi Mumbai facility will begin with one runway and 46 daily flights, operating 12 hours per day initially.
Once fully operational with two runways and 24x7 operations, the new airport is expected to significantly ease congestion at the existing Mumbai airport, which has been operating beyond its optimal capacity for several years.
Transformative Impact on Regional Development
The airport is expected to serve as a major catalyst for economic activity across Navi Mumbai, Raigad, and parts of Thane district. Real estate analysts suggest that the facility will drive demand for residential, commercial, and industrial properties in the surrounding areas.
The development is particularly significant for investors evaluating Thane versus Panvel real estate opportunities, as both regions stand to benefit from enhanced connectivity.
Infrastructure experts also point to synergies with mega Thane infrastructure projects and the planned Metro-8 connection between Mumbai and Navi Mumbai Airport, which is expected to become operational by 2026.
Future Expansion Plans
Following the soft launch on December 25, airport authorities plan to gradually expand both domestic and international connectivity. Charter operations and cargo movements are also expected to scale in parallel with infrastructure development and airline partnerships.
The facility represents one of the most significant additions to India's civil aviation landscape and is anticipated to play a pivotal role in accommodating the country's growing air travel demand. Industry observers suggest that the airport's impact will extend beyond aviation, contributing to infrastructure-driven realty growth across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
