Mumbai: The dream of a slum-free city may finally be inching closer as the Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) has set an ambitious target of delivering 5.09 lakh new homes for slum dwellers by 2030. This is more than double the total 2.75 lakh units built in the 29 years since the authority was established in 1996.

A dedicated Project Implementation Unit (PIU) has been set up to accelerate delivery, backed by reforms like drone and biometric surveys, fast-tracked approvals, and amnesty/JV schemes to revive stalled projects.

Recent Performance & Reforms

  • In just 100 days, SRA delivered 16,017 homes, signaling a faster pace compared to previous years.
  • In 2024-25, another 16,673 homes were completed.
  • Currently, 3.34 lakh homes are under construction, forming the backbone of the five-year target.

To safeguard slum dwellers, the Maharashtra government recently amended the Slum Areas (Improvement, Clearance and Redevelopment) Act, 1971. Builders who default on paying rent to displaced slum dwellers can now have their company or even personal assets attached and sold to recover arrears.

Leadership Statement

SRA CEO Mahindra Kalyankar emphasized that these reforms will ensure timely rent payments, faster clearances, and more efficient delivery. The authority has also digitized processes through e-office systems, shortlisted eligible developers and architects, and adopted policies to avoid halts in construction unless mandated by court orders.
