In a move aimed at fast-tracking urban transformation, the Uttar Pradesh government has announced an additional ₹700 crore allocation under the Smart City Mission. The fresh infusion of funds is expected to accelerate infrastructure upgrades and embed smart solutions across seven prominent cities in the state.
Equal Distribution to Key Urban Centres
Authorities stated that the allocated ₹700 crore will be equally divided among Ayodhya, Gorakhpur, Mathura, Shahjahanpur, Meerut, Ghaziabad, and Firozabad. Each city is set to receive ₹100 crore to pursue projects aligned with the broader goals of the Smart City Mission. This is over and above the ₹1,750 crore already distributed during the 2019–2024 period, where every selected city received ₹50 crore annually to boost urban infrastructure.
Strategic Focus Areas of Development
The newly sanctioned funds are expected to strengthen multiple aspects of urban life. According to officials familiar with the initiative, the focus will be on the following sectors:
- Integrated Traffic Management: High-tech traffic systems will be introduced to decongest roads and enhance commuter safety.
- Green Public Spaces: Development of parks and eco-friendly zones to improve urban livability and encourage sustainability.
- Education and Health Infrastructure: Modernisation of schools and hospitals to ensure equitable access to essential services.
- Smart Urban Amenities: Installation of solar-powered streetlights, digital classrooms, health ATMs, and open gyms to enhance public utility experiences.
Time-Bound Implementation Plan
To ensure transparent and efficient deployment of resources, the Smart City Mission in Uttar Pradesh has been extended until March 31, 2027. As per the directive, municipal corporations of the seven cities are required to submit comprehensive action plans that detail proposed projects for the financial years 2025–26 and 2026–27. The release of funds will follow a tranche-based model, subject to timely submission and satisfactory progress as evaluated by the authorities.
A Step Toward the $1 Trillion Economy Vision
The smart city upgrades form a critical part of Uttar Pradesh’s broader vision of evolving into a $1 trillion economy. The state is reportedly implementing sector-wise plans that span infrastructure, healthcare, education, and tourism—where urban development is playing a pivotal role in attracting investments and fostering inclusive growth.
By modernizing civic amenities and integrating smart technology into everyday infrastructure, the state government seeks to position these cities as future-ready hubs that align with both national urbanization goals and global sustainability benchmarks.
