Navi Mumbai International Airport Set to Launch Dual Operations by October 2025 with Major Infrastructure Plans

Adani Group executives have announced that the highly anticipated Navi Mumbai International Airport development will commence both domestic and international flight operations in October 2025, marking a significant milestone just weeks after its expected inauguration around September 30.
Phased Flight Operations to Scale Rapidly
According to Jeet Adani, director of airports at Adani Group, the airport will begin operations with 60 daily flights, comprising 30 arrivals and 30 departures during the initial month. Officials indicated that flight frequency would double after the first 30 days and subsequently reach 240-300 daily flights within six months of operation.
The executive stated that they aim to establish both domestic and international operations from the airport's first day of service. He emphasized that if simultaneous launch proves unfeasible for any reason, both categories of flights would definitely commence within October itself.
Passenger Capacity and Terminal Configuration
During its inaugural phase, the greenfield airport will accommodate 2 crore passengers annually, with capacity to handle 400 daily flights within the first year. The facility will maintain a 4:1 ratio between domestic and international flights, reflecting Terminal 1's capacity distribution of 1.7 crore passengers annually for domestic services and 30 lakh passengers per annum for international operations.
Adani noted that the airport design includes flexibility to increase international passenger capacity based on market demand and operational requirements.
Comprehensive Connectivity Infrastructure Planned
While initial connectivity may present challenges, officials explained that metro line connectivity between airports and other transportation networks will eventually provide comprehensive access through roads, rail, metro, air taxis, and water transport options.
The development plans include an aerocity featuring accommodation options ranging from budget to luxury hotels, creating a complete aviation ecosystem around the facility.
Digital-First Airport Experience
Adani Group has emphasized implementing a digital-first approach at Terminal 1, with every service digitally enabled from the operational launch date. The airport will utilize smart management systems to provide real-time information to passengers.
Through the Adani One application, travelers will receive live updates including baggage belt locations, eliminating the need to wait and search for checked luggage. The digital strategy aims to transform passenger experience from anxiety to excitement by addressing common traveler concerns.
The system will provide comprehensive flight information including walking times to gates, boarding status, and aircraft arrival updates, allowing passengers to explore the airport facilities comfortably.
Strategic Catchment Area Division
Operating both Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport and the new Navi Mumbai facility, Adani Group has identified specific catchment areas for each airport. Residents of northern Mumbai suburbs including Borivli, Kandivli, and Virar will likely continue using the existing airport due to proximity considerations.
The eastern Mumbai region extending to Pune will find Navi Mumbai Airport more convenient as it eliminates the need to enter the city. South Mumbai will remain equidistant from both facilities, providing travelers with equal access options.
Unified Pricing Strategy Proposal
The Adani Group has requested the Airports Economic Regulatory Authority to consider both airports as a single entity with common pricing structures. The proposal aims to address the cost structure differences between the older, depreciated CSMIA and the new greenfield facility.
Group officials are collaborating with government authorities to combine cost structures, potentially making air travel more affordable across the system. They argue that since both airports serve the same catchment area, economy, and city, differential pricing should be replaced with lower unified pricing for all passengers.
The AERA Act provisions allow for airport grouping, which could facilitate this integrated pricing approach for Mumbai's aviation infrastructure.
This development represents a significant advancement in Mumbai's aviation capacity and metropolitan region infrastructure growth, positioning the area for enhanced connectivity and economic development.
