Mumbai Metro Line 4 construction has achieved a significant engineering milestone with the successful installation of a massive 56-metre-long steel span girder at the Sonapur junction in Mulund over the past weekend. The complex operation marked an important advancement in the development of the Wadala-Kasarvadavali corridor, a crucial component of Mumbai's expanding metro network.
Engineering Precision in Two-Phase Implementation
Metro authorities executed the steel span installation through a meticulously planned two-phase operation that involved deployment of heavy-duty cranes, multi-axle trailers, and specialized support machinery. The construction work was strategically scheduled during nighttime hours to minimize disruption to daily traffic flow.
Traffic authorities closed the GMLR junction at Sonapur from 10 pm on Saturday until 10 am Sunday, followed by another closure period from 10 pm Sunday through 7 am Monday. During these closures, vehicular movement was redirected through alternative routes including Village Road in Bhandup, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Road in Mulund West, and Subhash Nagar Road.
Traffic Management and Commuter Impact
Despite the deployment of traffic police personnel to manage diversions and maintain traffic flow, motorists and taxi operators reported experiencing considerable delays and inconvenience. The Sonapur junction, which typically witnesses heavy traffic volumes even during weekends, functioned as a bottleneck throughout the closure periods.
However, authorities ensured that emergency vehicles retained access during the shutdown, guaranteeing uninterrupted emergency response services. A traffic official confirmed that additional work related to span connection might necessitate further lane closures between November 3 and December 31, though these will be implemented strategically to minimize commuter impact.
Upcoming Construction Schedule
Authorities have indicated that if final alignment or welding work remains pending on the steel span, the operation may resume over the weekend of November 9 and 10. This reflects the administration's commitment to maintaining project timelines without compromising safety standards or engineering integrity.
Strategic Importance of Metro Line 4
The Metro Line 4 project comprises a 32.32-kilometre elevated corridor that will connect Wadala to Kasarvadavali, forming a vital link in addressing traffic congestion across Mumbai's eastern suburbs. Once operational, the metro corridor is expected to significantly reduce commute times, enhance multimodal connectivity, and support the growing residential and commercial developments in Thane and surrounding areas.
The project represents part of Mumbai's broader infrastructure transformation, which aims to create a more efficient, faster, and better-connected urban transit system to accommodate the city's growing population and economic activities.
Implications for Regional Connectivity
While the temporary road closures tested commuter patience, the installation of the steel span girder represents a tangible step forward in Mumbai's ongoing infrastructure evolution. With continued coordination between metro authorities, traffic police, and local agencies, the Mulund area and surrounding regions are moving closer to enhanced connectivity that will benefit both residents and businesses operating in the corridor.
