Mumbai, Dharavi:

The Adani Group’s chairman, Gautam Adani, emphasized that the Dharavi redevelopment project is about more than just urban renewal; it represents a fundamental shift in the lives of over one million people living in one of the world’s largest slums. During an event at Mumbai's Jai Hind College, Adani shared that the project is aimed at restoring dignity to Dharavi's residents and symbolizes the power of dreaming big with purpose.

Lead Partner in Dharavi’s Renewal

The Adani Group is leading the Dharavi redevelopment through a special purpose vehicle (SPV), Dharavi Redevelopment Project Pvt Ltd, in which it holds an 80 percent stake. The remaining 20 percent is held by the Maharashtra government. The SPV is charged with converting Dharavi into a sustainable and modern living environment.

Survey Progress and Housing Plan

Surveys for the project are actively underway, with approximately 10,000 structures surveyed so far. The complete survey is expected to conclude by March 2025. Gautam Adani previously assured that housing would be provided to all Dharavi residents, regardless of their eligibility. Those considered ineligible—residents who moved to Dharavi after 2011—will receive homes in other parts of the city under a rental scheme, with an option to buy later.

Challenges in Securing Land for Ineligible Residents

Despite the project’s ambitious goals, challenges remain, particularly regarding land acquisition for ineligible residents. SVR Srinivas, CEO of the Dharavi Redevelopment Project, mentioned that around 500-600 acres of land are required for this purpose. While 27 acres have been secured from Indian Railways, additional land is being sought, including defunct salt pans owned by the union government.
