Delhi Government Announces Comprehensive Water and Sewer Master Plans to Transform Urban Infrastructure

The Delhi administration has revealed its intention to develop two critical infrastructure blueprints - a Water Master Plan and a Sewer Master Plan - to complement the recently approved Drainage Master Plan, as announced in September 2025.

Integrated Approach to Water Infrastructure Development

Officials stated that the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) and Public Works Department (PWD) would collaborate to ensure the national capital develops future-ready water infrastructure covering water supply, storage, sewage treatment, disposal, and sustainable usage practices. These comprehensive plans are designed to work alongside Delhi's drainage framework initiatives to form an integrated approach to water management.

Major Sewage Treatment Infrastructure Overhaul

The government also announced plans for a significant sewage overhaul, which includes constructing Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) across 22 drains that directly discharge into the Yamuna River. This initiative aligns with Delhi Master Plan 2041's vision for sustainable urban development.

Addressing Current Infrastructure Challenges

Authorities emphasized that Delhi's existing drainage infrastructure faces persistent problems including waterlogging, inadequate stormwater handling, and mixed sewage drain overflows. The drainage master plan addresses stormwater and flood risk, but gaps remain in potable water supply, sewage treatment and sustainable water recycling. Urban growth, climate change and increasing rainfall intensity make it imperative to plan comprehensively rather than implementing reactive patch-ups, officials noted.
