After years of environmentalist pressure, the Maharashtra Forest Department is installing a CCTV surveillance system. This Rs 120 crore strategic program monitors 195 "sensitive" mangrove habitats in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region using 669 high-tech cameras.

Environmental activists have complained to Prime Minister Narendra Modi that Navi Mumbai's Prime Minister's Awas Yojana (PMAY) is encroaching on protected mangrove zones and breaking environmental laws.

The government reduced Mumbai's saltpan and mangrove slum redevelopment building area from 80% to 65%. BMC manages the remaining 35% for open space amenities. This comes seven months after the original construction ban in eco-sensitive zones.
