Santacruz-Chembur Link Road Extension Nears Completion

The Mumbai Traffic Police recently granted permission to complete the unfinished section of the cable-stayed bridge on the Vakola flyover, enabling the long-delayed extension of the Santacruz-Chembur Link Road (SCLR) to move forward. Officials estimated that this final portion of the project would take six months to complete, marking a crucial step in the city's infrastructure development.

2. A Complex Engineering Feat

The construction of the cable-stayed bridge has presented significant challenges due to its design. Positioned 22 meters above the road, the bridge includes a sharp 70-degree bend and ranges in width from 10.5 to 17.5 meters. This elevated section ensures enhanced traffic safety and connectivity, particularly in the densely populated Vakola area.

3. Project Delays and Rising Costs

The SCLR extension project, originally scheduled for completion in 2024, faced repeated delays primarily due to the denial of traffic block permissions. This led to cost escalations, with the initial budget of ₹450 crores in 2016 now rising to ₹650 crores. These delays have also extended the project timeline significantly.

4. Improved Connectivity Upon Completion

Once the bridge is operational, motorists traveling between Chembur, Kurla, and Vile Parle will benefit from a direct route, reducing travel time and easing congestion on alternative roads. 5. Phased Progress of the SCLR Project

The 4.2-kilometer-long SCLR extension has been executed in four phases: The first section, connecting MCNL Junction to LBS Road in BKC, was opened after a three-kilometer stretch between Kurla and Vakola became operational in February 2023. Another two-kilometer section followed. The fourth section, near a luxury hotel and the MMRDA ground in BKC, was opened approximately a year ago.
