Panjim, Goa's capital city, is on the verge of receiving 24x7 water supply via a SCADA (supervisory control and data acquisition) system, following the approval of eight components/works by the Imagine Panjim Smart City Development Limited (IPSCDL).

According to available information, administrative permission and spending sanction have been given for eight of the thirteen components. All of these projects will be carried out by Division III of the Public Works Department (PWD).

The works include the replacement of 3.3 kilovolt motors and control panels, the supply and installation of pumps, the supply and installation of three modular substations, the replacement of centrifugal pumps and vertical pumps, the retrofit of two vertical turbine pumps, the replacement of search control valves, the implementation of a digitisation project, and the implementation of a smart water supply system to eliminate non-revenue water (NRW).

Two modular sub-stations will be installed at the Opa Water Treatment Plant for the dedicated pipeline bringing water to Panjim, while one will be installed at Altinho.

The other five components, which include the building of a 2000-litre sump and a 650-litre overhead reservoir, both of which are proposed for Altinho, are currently through a tendering procedure.

The 13 components are projected to cost Rs 77.37 crore in total.

In Goa, the per capita water need is 150 litres per capita per day (LPCD) in urban areas with sewage lines, 140 litres per capita per day in rural regions without sewerage lines, and 70 litres per person per day in rural areas.

However, the PWD (water supply division) has noted that customers are consuming more water and utilising the extra for gardening, washing their vehicles, and cleaning their premises.

24x7 water supply, according to PWD sources, is not round-the-clock water but rather a provision for users to store water in sump tanks in their homes.

This is actually great news for the residents in Pajim and will also surely boost the Panjim real estate market in the days to come.
