MUMBAI: A monumental 2,000-metric-ton arch bridge, integral to the Mumbai Coastal Road project, embarked on its voyage from Mazagon Dock's Nhava unit at 12:30 PM on Wednesday.

The operation to erect this massive structure is scheduled for the morning of April 26, with April 27 set as a backup date to accommodate any adverse weather conditions.

By Wednesday evening, the bridge had navigated past Colaba along Mumbai’s western shoreline and was anticipated to reach the Worli site of the project by late night. The barge, lacking its own propulsion, is towed by tugs, with the main tug handling the pull and two additional tugs on either side to stabilize the barge during its journey.

The bridge is a collaborative effort, with Hindustan Construction Company and Hyundai Development Corporation leading the construction. This venture also involves critical logistical and engineering support from Freight Wings Pvt Ltd, which provides specialized solutions including jack-up, lifting, loadout, marine transportation, and erection for this project’s bridges.

Once installed, this arch bridge will link the right-hand side arm of the Mumbai Coastal Road with the iconic Bandra-Worli Sea Link. Originally planned for April 21, the relocation was delayed due to unfavorable weather, showcasing the project's responsiveness to environmental considerations.
