The upcoming Integrated Manufacturing Cluster (IMC) in Gaya, Bihar, has secured environmental clearance from the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC), marking a crucial step toward building the state’s first integrated industrial township under the Amritsar–Kolkata Industrial Corridor (AKIC).
A Greenfield Push for Eastern India's Industrial Evolution
The IMC Gaya is being spearheaded by Bihar Integrated Manufacturing City Gaya Limited (BIMCGL), a special purpose vehicle jointly established by the Government of India and the Government of Bihar. Designed as a smart, greenfield industrial township, the project aims to position Gaya as a new center for innovation, enterprise, and employment in eastern India.
Strategic Location Fuels Investor Appeal
Located near the spiritually significant town of Bodh Gaya, the 1,670-acre development will offer more than 1,000 acres of industrial plots. The cluster promises robust multimodal connectivity through the Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor (EDFC) and proximity to key national highways, railways, and an airport—making it attractive for industries looking for efficient logistics and reduced operational costs.
Infrastructure Built for the Future
The IMC is being developed with a sustainability-first approach. Core features include:
-
Plug-and-play industrial zones for ease of business setup
-
Reliable utility networks with dedicated power, water supply, and drainage systems
-
Solid waste management and treatment infrastructure
-
Integrated command and control centers for smart governance
-
Green zones covering 33% of the area to enhance environmental balance
Massive Economic Potential
The cluster is expected to draw investments worth ₹16,000 crore and generate around 1.1 lakh job opportunities, offering a major boost to Bihar’s industrial ecosystem. Officials believe the project could help stem outward migration by creating substantial local employment, while contributing to inclusive and sustainable economic development.
Fast-Tracked Clearances to Attract Industry
The environmental approval, granted under the ‘Industrial Area’ classification, was processed within seven months—significantly faster than standard timelines. This eliminates the need for individual public hearings for each industrial unit, thereby easing regulatory hurdles for incoming investors and accelerating the rollout of the township.
Collaborative Oversight and Water Planning
In a recent multi-agency site inspection, representatives from NICDC, BIADA, the Water Resources Department, the National Institute of Hydrology, and Gaya’s district administration evaluated water infrastructure requirements. The focus was on planning for sustainable water storage and distribution—essential for long-term industrial viability.
