The Kerala government is reportedly moving closer to finalizing a deal with real estate major DLF to purchase the historic Aspinwall House and the adjacent Cabral Yard in Fort Kochi. This initiative, aimed at establishing a permanent venue for the internationally acclaimed Kochi-Muziris Biennale, has gained momentum after DLF revised its earlier valuation of ₹86.38 crore to a new offer of ₹78.93 crore.
Final Decision Awaited from Chief Minister
According to sources, this revived proposal has been under active consideration in top-level government meetings and is currently awaiting the Chief Minister’s nod for final approval. In the interim, the government is also expected to lease the venue for the upcoming Biennale edition, scheduled between December 12, 2025, and March 31, 2026.
Move Counters Cultural Integrity Concerns
This decision is being seen as a countermeasure to earlier concerns regarding the venue’s future, following reports that DLF had initiated discussions with the Indian Coast Guard regarding the property's potential handover. That possibility had triggered widespread political and cultural opposition.
Artists and Foundation Applaud the Initiative
Artists across Kerala have voiced strong support for the move. Representatives from the Kochi Biennale Foundation (KBF), which organizes the art festival, have expressed relief and optimism over the prospective public ownership of the historic site. Bose Krishnamachari, president of KBF, is said to have welcomed the government’s proactive stance, viewing it as a step toward securing the Biennale’s long-term future.
Call to Declare Aspinwall House a Cultural Monument
Renowned contemporary artist T V Santosh has reportedly called the move a major step for heritage preservation and tourism in Kerala. He has suggested that the property be declared a cultural monument and promoted as a permanent venue for art and cultural activities.
Cultural Continuity and Public Ownership in Focus
The anticipated acquisition is being seen as a landmark cultural policy move by the Kerala government. By bringing Aspinwall House under public ownership, the state aims to eliminate the longstanding uncertainties surrounding the Biennale’s venue and reinforce its commitment to cultural and artistic excellence in Fort Kochi.
