The Vasai-Virar City Municipal Corporation (VVCMC) has reportedly launched a large-scale demolition drive targeting illegal constructions along key stormwater nullahs. This proactive measure is intended to reduce the risk of flooding ahead of the monsoon season.

Critical Nullah Blockages Spark Action

Sources noted that in localities such as Devdal, a natural drainage nullah originally 23 feet wide had been reduced to a mere 6 feet due to unauthorized structures. This narrowing raised significant alarm among nearby residents who feared that restricted water flow could lead to waterlogging and severe flooding once the rains begin.

Officials from VVCMC have now initiated the removal of these encroachments, aiming to restore the original width and function of the drainage channels.

Tackling the Consequences of Unplanned Growth

This effort forms part of a broader strategy by VVCMC to address long-standing urban development issues in the Vasai-Virar region. Over the years, unchecked construction and rapid urban sprawl have led to the choking of natural water pathways, exacerbating the risk of monsoon-related disasters.

By reclaiming these vital drainage lines, the municipal body intends to build greater flood resilience and safeguard urban infrastructure and lives.
