Protecting Against Fraud: Minister Highlights the Need for Originals

Tamil Nadu’s Minister for Commercial Taxes and Registration, P. Moorthy, emphasized in the Assembly on April 23, 2025, that the submission of the original parent document is essential for property registration. He explained that this measure was crucial to prevent attempts of fraud using fake photocopies.

The Minister was responding to AIADMK legislator S. Sundararajan from Sankari, who had raised concerns regarding the difficulties property owners face when registering properties without the original parent document. Sundararajan also cited a related court judgment during the discussion.

Procedure in Case of Lost Original Document

In his reply, P. Moorthy stated that if the original parent document was lost, property owners must obtain a "non-traceable certificate" from the police. He reiterated that insisting on the original document was necessary in light of incidents where photocopies were misused.

Revenue Performance of Registration Department

Speaking during the debate on the demand for grants for the Commercial Taxes and Registration Department for 2025-26, the Minister shared that ₹21,968.24 crore was generated through the registration of 33,59,175 documents in the financial year 2024-25.

In comparison, the department had earned the following revenues through document registrations:

Financial Year Revenue Generated
2024-25 ₹21,968.24 crore
2023-24 ₹18,825.32 crore
2022-23 ₹17,296.84 crore
2021-22 ₹13,913.65 crore
