Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), India's aviation regulator, has awarded an aerodrome licence to the upcoming Mopa airport in Goa, paving the way for commercial flights to commence soon.

The new airport would be situated around 35 kilometres north of Panjim in northern Goa and will be the second commercial airport in a state where Dabolim in the city of Mormugao currently operates.

Due to the fact that the current Dabolim airport is shared with the Indian Navy, it is subject to flight limitations that limit the number of daily flights and the hours of operation. The licence for the Mopa airport, which will be administered by the GMR firm, was issued on October 26, according to a senior official at the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).

The Mopa airport will be the second airport in Goa, the first being the airfield shared by the Indian Navy and Mormugao city, Dabolim airport.

Passenger capacity increases from 4.4 million in phase I to 5.8 million in phase II of the airport's construction. After phase IV is finished, the total capacity will exceed 13,1 million passengers per year.

Phase III will expand the capacity to 9.4 million passengers per year.GMR Airports Ltd (GAL), a subsidiary of GMR Infrastructure, signed a concession deal with the government of Goa in November 2016 for the construction and management of a Greenfield international airport in Mopa.GMR Goa International Airport, a subsidiary of GAL, is designing, constructing, financing, operating, and transferring (DBFOT) the project.

The operator conducted landing tests for approaches 10 and 28 of the newly built runway in September. Currently, just 70 flights arrive each day at Dabolim airport, a civil enclave. From 9 a.m. until 2 p.m., no landings are permitted at this location.Once the Mopa airport is open, the number of flights landing in Goa would grow to 150, Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant declared in July of this year. 131 airports are currently operational in the United States.
