In a bid to foster environmentally conscious real estate development, the Confederation of Real Estate Developers’ Associations of India (CREDAI) recently held a high-level dialogue with Maharashtra's Environment Minister, Smt. Pankaja Munde. The meeting focused on expediting environmental clearance processes and aligning projects with sustainability norms.

Push for Timely Environmental Clearances

CREDAI is said to have raised concerns regarding the prolonged delays in environmental clearance for several real estate projects. These delays, according to the delegation, have led to significant disruptions in project timelines and financial strategies. To address this, the industry body urged the minister to introduce streamlined mechanisms that would ensure quicker and more predictable approval processes.

Proposal to Use Updated CEPI Scores

The delegation reportedly suggested that environmental assessments should be conducted based on the latest Comprehensive Environmental Pollution Index (CEPI) scores, as outlined in recent High Court directives. This proposal is intended to bring clarity to developers regarding the feasibility of projects, especially in areas flagged for environmental sensitivity.

Massive Tree Plantation Plan Announced

As part of its broader green agenda, CREDAI is believed to have announced its commitment to plant one million trees. These would be strategically planted along the Coastal Road Project and across key areas in the Western Ghats. This ambitious initiative is aimed at contributing meaningfully to India’s carbon sequestration goals and enhancing ecological balance in urban and semi-urban landscapes.

Call for Government-Industry Synergy

The meeting also spotlighted the need for cohesive action between the government and real estate sector. CREDAI expressed the view that collaborative policymaking could help balance rapid urban expansion with the need for ecological preservation, thereby laying the groundwork for sustainable urban ecosystems across Maharashtra.

A Step Towards Greener Real Estate

This engagement has been viewed as a constructive step towards embedding sustainability deeper into the core of Maharashtra’s urban planning and real estate practices. Industry representatives reiterated their readiness to align with environmental mandates while continuing to support the State’s development agenda.
