In a notable policy move, the Andhra Pradesh government has extended full property tax exemption to homes of active defence personnel located in the state’s rural gram panchayat areas. Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan announced this expanded benefit, which previously applied only to retired soldiers or those posted in sensitive zones.

A Tribute to Sacrifice

This decision was reportedly influenced by the recent death of 23-year-old Agniveer Murali Naik from Sri Sathya Sai district, who was killed during an encounter in Jammu and Kashmir on May 9, 2025. The timing of the announcement is seen as a gesture to honour the courage and sacrifice of India’s armed forces.

What the Exemption Covers

  • 100% exemption from property tax for houses owned by active defence personnel in rural areas.

  • Applies to properties owned individually or jointly with spouses.

  • Covers personnel from the Army, Navy, Air Force, CRPF, and other paramilitary forces.

  • Applies across all gram panchayat jurisdictions in Andhra Pradesh.

  • Initiated on recommendation from the Director of Sainik Welfare.

Policy Objectives

  • Ease financial burden on serving defence families living in rural areas.

  • Extend recognition beyond veterans to currently serving personnel.

  • Bolster morale and reinforce state-level appreciation for defence services.

Broader Context

The exemption builds upon earlier measures that offered tax relief to retired or frontline-posted personnel. With national focus intensifying on the welfare of Agniveers and active-duty staff, especially after recent casualties, the government’s move reflects both public sentiment and administrative responsiveness.

Important Background Information

  • Andhra Pradesh: A South Indian state comprising 26 districts.
